Playoffs

Playoff Schedule
Drumroll please…. Here’s the bracket for tomorrow! Remember that even if you don’t play until 10 or 11am, you may ref the 9am games, so make sure you read it carefully. I have some reminder slips to hand out at the field and a big bracket posterboard to report your scores to at Field 1. If you’re curious how we ranked you, check out the season ending Standings stats and make sure to check your flip cup stats too because there will be a second bracket board for that at Whisky Park for our 5:30pm tournament.

Registering Subs
Remember, you must email me (by 8pm today) first and last names of any subs you’d like to register with a $20 donation at the check in table tomorrow AM. Your team may only register subs if you are in jeopardy of forfeiting. If your team already has 12 or more players in attendance, you may not register any subs.
Rules for Playoffs
Tensions sometimes run high in playoffs and I want to remind everyone to have a good time and not get overly competitive. Remember that our refs are volunteers and only your captain may question a ref’s calls and any disputes are always settled by the home plate ref, no questions asked. Any players not following that simple rule will be ejected at the home plate ref’s discretion. Let’s keep it all in good fun! The best way to avoid confusion is to brush up on the Official Rules or at the very least read the abbreviated Rules Review. There are also special Tournament Guidelines that explain a few deviations from our usual season rules, such as 12-run rule and tie-break procedures.

In summary, 5 THINGS to DO before tomorrow:

  1. Check out the bracket for games/times.
  2. Get cash to buy some raffle tickets for the Barrow-O-Booze.
  3. Read through the WAKA Tournament Guidelines.
  4. Look at your team’s Flip Cup ranking in the Season Standings.
  5. Invite your friends to our End of Season Party next Sat, 6/29 at Darby's.

Kickballer’s Guide to the Kentucky Derby

This week’s theme is “Derby Night” because the Kentucky Derby occurred this past Saurday.  Congrats to the winning horse “Orb”.  In conjunction with the event are a ton of parties.  At the racetrack itself, at other racetracks and many people have themed parties as well.  At the actual track the “Infield” is where all of the real party animals go to drink mint juleps and show off their fanciness.

Speaking of fanciness … the attire is one of the main parts of the event a well.  For the ladies and gentlemen a pictorial representation is below to guide you…

For the gents.
For the ladies.

For the ladies, again.
And the jockeys!!!

One cannot forget the jockeys either.  I do not think that attendees of the derby dress up as horses, or jockeys … but that doesn’t mean you can’t at kickball! Just saying… See you at the field!  A prize package from our beer sponsor will be awarded to the best dressed individual or team for this week’s theme.

Bar Rule #2: "Eat or drink something at the bar!”

Kickball is a simple game that has a finite set of rules.  Being a part of the Twin Cities WAKA Kickball league has another portion off the field though, the bar!  This is the start of the “Unofficial Rules of Kickball” that will ensure you have a good time off the field at the bar and social events!

Rule #2: “Eat or drink something at the bar!”

You followed Rule #1, congratulations!  Also you just played an intense game of kickball you need to refuel!  Be it with a delicious hops based recovery drink, some delectable delicacies, or an invigorating WAKA shot/mixed drink, the bar will be more than happy to accommodate.  Not only does the bar put up with us and our shenanigans, but in most cases they even encourage it.  You know about this time you’re losing your field buzz too and no one likes that…

Check out them specials!

• $5 Appetizer buffet from 8-10pm
• $6 Natty Light pitchers
• $3 Rail Drinks
• $3 Domestic Pints
• $3 WAKA Shots (details coming soon!)
• LATE Night special:  $3 Vodka Red Bulls 10pm-close
• Frequent Baller Card (do the tasks, get free drinks, so easy a caveperson could do it!)

Still not convinced that this is a good idea yet?  Or you say to yourself, “Hey self, you know you don’t have the money to be ballin’ outta control at the field AND the bar”.  Nay!  I say to you … Nay!  Below are some ways to work around this philosophy.

Does someone owe you less than $20?  Claim repayment at the bar in the form of yum-yums and libations.

Feeling lucky?  Make bets with teammates or opponents!  Friendly wagers between captains, rewards for outlandish plays, or for breaking the ice with that pulchritudinous man or woman.  A game could even be made out of it like “the game” from waiting

...or the circle game [A game of peripheral vision, trickery and motor skills. The Circle Game Definition #1].

I digress … Maybe you are a ‘baller though and you want to share your ‘baller status with others.  Buy the theme night judges a drink … they follow the rules on the field and when it comes to flip cup.  But for all things spirit and theme related they are in no way, shape, or form, above bribes.  In fact they are encouraged!

Or maybe something a bit more personally beneficial…  Did you meet any new “friends” on the field?  You say you need a way to break the ice with that cute guy/gal you just met?  You locked eyes with them as you were running the bases and in the process you ran over their second-base player?  Don’t even know their name?  Or don’t have anything to talk about?  Buy them a drink! This is a sure fire way to break the ice, “Buying someone a drink is five times better than a handshake”, according to a reputable source.  It is likewise a great way to find out if they may fancy you as well.  You offer to buy a drink and they decline, they probably don’t like you.  If they accept, it is still possible that they don’t like you… However!  If they in turn offer to buy you in, you’re in like flint.  Simple, huh?

In summary, person up, purchase a beverage, or two, or a dozen! and spend some quality time in the happy company of your kickballin’ peers!

[P.S. I just got you all…]

Bar Rule #1: “Show up at the bar after the game!”

Kickball is a simple game that has a finite set of rules.  Being a part of the Twin Cities WAKA Kickball league has another portion off the field though, the bar!  This is the start of the “Unofficial Rules of Kickball” that will ensure you have a good time off the field at the bar and social events!

The rules will start simple and become more complex, but they will always be sure to guide you to a good kickballing time!

Rule #1: “Show up at the bar after the game”

First things first, in order for these rules to be helpful you actually have to show up at the bar!  The bar, in this case Whisky Park, is the cherry on top of a fantastic night of kickball.  You get to hang out, socialize with your team/others and enjoy specials at the bar that are kickballers only.  Win! Lest us not forget the secondary (to some teams primary) competition of Flip Cup (flippy cup, or tippy cup to some as well … weirdos …).

What are some reasons that people do not go to the bar?
1.     They lost at the field
2.     They don’t like fun
3.     They have something important to do early the next day

Okay, you’re not having a goodtime, you lost at the field and the last thing you want to do is go to the bar and hang out with awesome people and have a goodtime?  Well, you need to turn that frown upside down and think to your self … “YOLO” (You Only Lose Once) and get yourself and team to the bar!  No bad can come from this situation.  Let’s recap … you lost at the field, you go to the bar, you get to drink beer and even if you lose at flip cup you still get to drink beer which is a win in my book.  Am I right?!

Scenario 2, you don’t like fun.  This is legitimate, not fun people may not find going to the bar fun.  However you joined an adult kickball league, so I cannot imagine that this scenario is possible.  Reassess your thoughts and I will see you at the bar!

Lastly, something important the next day is not a valid excuse either.  Worst case scenario you get to the bar by 9pm, have a drink (maybe share one with someone if your into that), play flip cup, listen for “Call me Maybe” (Still song of the season?! Only time will tell…) and your on your way home by 10pm with plenty of time for activities, or getting to bed for a good night’s sleep.

So there you have it.  You have no valid reasoning to NOT go to the bar.  So do it … DO IT NOW!  And I will see you at Whisky Park after the game!
